In an email sent on September 28, Kevin
Bertorelli reminded the Club's members that there was going to be a FREE
Ultralight inspection the following Saturday morning, October 2, starting at
8:00 am in hangar #3 at Clow. In a follow-up, Bill Mills clarified a few
things about the inspection program. He noted that Steve Meyers and Ed Meyer
were doing this for us as a way of saying thank you to the Club for our helping
them out at the pancake fly-in last year. Bill reminded us that Steve and Ed
are A&P mechanics who very much wanted to promote safety. Bill encouraged us to
feel very safe in participating in this event, and to take the opportunity to
have one-on-one dialogue with a qualified mechanic to look your plane over and
ask questions.
After the event had taken place, Kevin wrote this:
"Sure wish more of the club members could have made it over to Clow for the safety inspections this morning. The inspectors, Ed Meyer, Steve Meyers, Andy Meyers, Dr. Ken Packer, and John Nowicki were all very knowledgeable and helpful. Before beginning we were asked to introduce ourselves and express what aviation background we had. Afterward the inspectors provided their qualification followed by a short discussion on safety and sport pilot. We then rolled our planes into hangar #3 and the inspectors went to work. They checked over every part of our planes making safety suggestions as they went along. Dr. Ken Packer, in particular, was extremely knowledgeable about metal fatigue and metallurgy as related to aircraft. All of the inspectors were excellent and not only helped us understand what to do to make our planes safer but why. Those of us that attended were very happy we did."
