Evan Solos Cessna 152Story submitted by Evan WrightAfter several false starts with my GA lessons, I finally soloed on 6/30 in a 152 at Clow Airport. You'd think that ultralight flying would have made the transition easy, but there were several things that goofed me up. Since ultralights descend quickly due to their high drag when the power is pulled, I consistently flew my approaches too high at first. The other big thing that took some getting used to was talking on the radio. I found I had a serious case of "mic fright", and it took some time getting over it. Ironically, when it came time for me to actually solo, my instructor waved me over after my first landing and told me my transmitter was not working, but to go ahead with the next two patterns anyway...Oh well, so much for all my confident radio calls. After I had completed all three circuits, secured the aircraft, and walked back to the FBO, I 'fessed up about the "Crash" nickname you guys gave me. I probably shouldn't have done that, because now there is shirt back which says 'Evan "Crash" Wright' hanging up on the wall of A&M Aviation. Mick has reminded me that the speed limit below 10,000 ft. is 200 kts to make sure I'm not out terrorizing ultralights while I'm out getting my solo hours. So don't worry, but hopefully you'll be seeing me flying something with an N number more in the future. Back to Front Page |
