A Museum in our Midst
(Cribbed from emails received from Brad Wolf)
On December 18, 2003, a meeting took place regarding the desire of a group of people to create an aviation museum, subsequently named the Bolingbrook Air Museum, at Clow Airport. This group hopes to provide education, and to preserve and promote aviation through community involvement. In addition, they want to help people understand science through aircraft restoration. They plan to fund this effort through a consortium of private, governmental and corporate donations. The group is developing relationships with local grade schools, high schools and colleges in the hopes of partnering in the offering of educational opportunities.
The presentation at the meeting was well thought out, and it was clear that a lot of work and planning has gone into the endeavor. They have developed committees to assist in the implementation of their overall plan, to encourage membership and volunteers, to retrieve aircraft for the museum, to handle restoration, to manage public affairs and fund raising, to provide education, to address science and technology, and to establish a building to house the museum. Most of the people at the meeting signed up for one or more of the committees.
The City of Bolingbrook has reacted positively regarding the proposal, and the group is off to a good start: it has received a commitment from the Navy museum in Pensacola to donate a T2 Buckeye to this fledgling endeavor. Efforts are underway to send a team to retrieve the plane. Volunteers are needed!
The not-for-profit organization that helped fund the Wright Flyer Redux was Packard Wings. They plan, at least initially, to use this same 501(c) corporation as the Museum foundation.
There is a lot of energy behind this proposal, and there will surely be plenty of opportunities for FVFC or individual members to support this effort.
