President' MessageStory submitted by Mick PahnkeThis is a day of transition where instead of the days growing progressively shorter, they now start adding a few moments of extra daylight. Last week was the FVFC Christmas party held at Walter Payton's Round House. All that attended agreed that this was one of the best of recent memory and the consensus was that we should have next year's party here. Having just been voted in for another year as the president of the Club, it is appropriate to look back at some of the past year successes as a place to build on for next year. We had two meetings in my hanger, the first was during the winter with light snow, cold temperatures and my torpedo heater screaming for all it was worth. That one was an unplanned event and not one to repeat but hey, it was easy to keep the beer cold. The next one was around June with the long days of summer and several ultralights flying in from Cushing field for a picnic and meeting. From everyone's perspective, that one was an unqualified success! I say we have a couple more of the summer fly-in meetings for this year. It saved the Club money by not having to rent-out the restaurant and it gave people an excuse to fly (like we need an excuse). There were two picnics this year, one at Cushing and the other at Clow. People flew in to both and rides were available to all that wanted them. The food was great and this gives everyone a chance to involve their families. These were both big successes and allowed FVFC to invite people from other clubs. These are definitely worth a repeat although we need to work harder on getting participation from other clubs. Oshkosh. What an event this is. We had something like 15 Club members at this year's event with a number of us flying up and camping together at the UL campgrounds. I'll be there again this year and I hope with at least as many members as last year. There was one other fly-in event of note from last season and this was the Boswell Indiana flight. Five or six of us flew out for this one and three camped out for the night, just a great time. There are several of these available each year; Lincoln, Tommy's, Marshall Michigan and Joe Marr's club hosted one. I want every club member to attend at least one of these events this coming year. Everything considered, this was a good year but there is always room for improvement. For February's meeting, I have invited a meteorologist to talk about weather and flying. Last year we had progress reports on the Sport Pilot proposal. Perhaps we can bring in a knowledgeable official to give us an update. I am sure every one of you has an idea for meeting and I would like to hear it. After all, this is your Club. Back to Front Page |
