Pieced Together by Brian Gilomen from Stuff Sent by Mick Pahnke

While Mick hasn't sent me pictures of his RV project in several months, the material that I have received since the last Newsletter went out is pretty interesting!  On Monday, February 7, 2005, he emailed me the following:

Because the weekend was warm, I decided that would be a good day to install the rudder and elevators.  My garage is not large enough to hold the plane with the rudder installed, I put up a tarp over the door and opened up the garage door to give me an extra foot of room.  Even though the tail has been completed for some time, it was nice to see it actual installed on the plane.  It took me two days to get it fitted and properly set with the correct amount of travel and all of the hinge bearings to properly align.  I have a binding problem with full down elevator that I need to track down and I still have to trim the empennage gap seals.  Still plenty to do back there but the systems are finally all coming together.  The rudder and elevators are back in the basement since there is no need to leave them on.

Mick's friend, Dave Sloan over in Indiana, is flying a RV6a but is building this RV3 with 160 hp Lycoming. Mick was bugging him for pictures and he finally came through.

Mick,
I ran out to the shop and took a couple photo's of my RV-3B. I have the engine hung, the tail on, the panel finished and am at the point where I am finishing the wiring. All I have left is to wire all the trims (Elev, Rudder, Aileron) & the electric flap motor. Still plenty to go.

As for your parking brake question - YES! If I were to build another nose wheel airplane I would add a parking brake and even dual brakes. The tail draggers don't tend to move a lot when you park to get out. But my 6A I can't count the times I needed help with holding the plane until I got out. I didn't install dual brakes on it and have wished I did. Your bird is looking mighty fine! Keep it up it will all be worth it!

The end of last month, Mick wrote several of us to say that he had seen a completion photo of an RV-8A in one of the flying magazines and that he liked the paint scheme.  He was looking for a paint design for his plane that would not be too difficult to execute.  The plane in the magazine apparently did not show wing details, so through the miracle of modern electronics Mick sent the owner an email.  In about two hours the guy got back to him with a zip file of about 9 pictures of his plane.  A second contact later in the afternoon produced the attached pictures.  Apparently, the fellow got the concept for the paint scheme from the P51 Miss America:
